In 1982, members of the South Dakota Associated School Boards established the Associated School Boards Protective Trust (ASBPT). Formed as an unincorporated assessable association through a joint powers agreement, ASBPT was created by public K-12 school districts to support their insurance and risk management needs.
ASBPT is guided by a seven-member Board of Directors, each representing school districts that participate in one or more of the Trust’s insurance pools. These pools were developed to offer reliable, high-quality coverage tailored to the diverse needs of school districts across the state.
Today, ASBPT serves more than 100 member districts, prioritizing comprehensive coverage, dependable service, and cost-effective solutions. Working collaboratively with school districts, the Trust helps shape the design, structure, and administration of its three primary insurance programs:
- Health Insurance
- Property & Liability Coverage
- Workers’ Compensation Coverage
